Fill up with Pigsel

I thought that pigs only ate mud and they were just dirty animals which is why they like to sit in the mud. Boy was I wrong! Pigs don't eat the mud, they use it to keep them cool because they have no sweat glands which was another thing I learned. The mud also protects them from insects.

For me the most remarkable thing about pigs, though, was about their fat. Pig fat usually is thrown away when we are cooking it, but I would have never thought that pig fat could be turned into bio-fuel! This bio-fuel can be used to power a motor vehicle just like gas and diesel but only cleaner to the environment.

I was thinking about this and I was trying to imagine how many pigs they may need produce enough fuel to use. Maybe your uncle might know, Leroy?
I was wondering, too, what would they call that kind of fuel...pigsel?

And I thought pigs were only good for one thing................FOOD!!

Sniffer Pigs

Well, there was so much I learnt in class about pigs that I didn't know before. I mean aren't pigs just good for food?

I knew about the fat being used for bio-fuel from watching “The Colony”. I thought it was something they made up just for the movie, guess I was wrong. It’s pretty amazing though. In the movie an old man who was a farmer gave them the idea. The fat had to be boiled to just the right temperature until it became pure oil. They then poured it into an old van and drove off!

The thing about pigs being the fourth most intelligent animals in the world was a revelation for me. They don't seem to do anything but eat and lie in the mud all day. And then, there sense of smell is so highly developed that they can sniff and find things underground, and even help policemen find drugs? I thought that was a thing for dogs alone. Imagine going through the airport and having a pig check out your luggage! - written by Josiah

They eat anything!

Thanks for getting that information about bio-fuel, Leroy. I was not too sure what it was although I figured it must have something to do with fuel, since it was part of the word.

But what I want to write about is the taste buds of pigs. Pigs have 15,000 taste buds. That is a lot. I was wondering if maybe that is why they eat so many different kinds of things, even rotten meat and their excreta! I looked up for the meaning of that word; it is what my little brother does in his diaper.

After reading the story about pigs I'm not too sure how much of it I will be eating again. - written by David

Environment Friendly

I thought I knew a lot about pigs because my uncle owns a pig farm, but I learnt a lot more about pigs in class today.

The most interesting part was that their fat can be used for bio-fuel. I was not sure what "bio-fuel" meant so I went up on the Internet to get information. Bio-fuel is gas or liquid fuel made from plant material (biomass). It includes wood, wood waste, wood liquors, peat, railroad ties, wood sludge, spent sulfite liquors, agricultural waste, straw, tires, fish oils, tall oil, sludge waste, waste alcohol, municipal solid waste, landfill gases and other wastes.

I think it is a good thing that we can now use pig fat to make fuel, it may be better for the environment. - posted by Leroy
